Journey into the Amazon

Discover the World's Great River Your Way

DESCRIPTION:

Throughout history, the legends of the Amazon have enticed explorers and adventures as diverse as Sir Walter Raleigh, who wrote of a near-mystical land of incomparable riches and beauty, and Theodore Roosevelt, whose own tales of rugged adventure inspired a generation of armchair travelers.

Today, the lure of the Amazon is no less compelling. In fact, as the region’s vital role in the fields of biodiversity, medicine, and conservation has been prominently established, the appeal is even more powerful. In the rainforests of the Amazon—the greatest single source of life on earth—the diversity of plant life, birdlife, butterflies, reptiles, fishes, and other fauna is simply staggering!

In the tradition of history's great adventures, delve into the depths of one of the most exciting tropical ecosystems on earth. Gain a deeper understanding od the immense diversity of wildlife and abundant natural beauty of this corner of the world. See its flooded forest and look for pink dolphins, scarlet macaws, yellow-headed carcaras, jabiru storks, howler monkeys and more.

There are several ways and price points from which to explore the Amazon, all of which are fabulous!

Expedition Ship: Board a classically styled Amazon exploratory riverboat that is able to enter small tributaries where the wildlife of the Amazon abounds. Navigate through narrow passages, flooded forests, and black-water river tributaries. Onboard dining features local cuisine prepared daily with Brazil’s freshest fish, fruit, vegetables, and other local products. An expansive observation deck provides a window on an ever-changing vista of exotic beauty.

Luxury Ship: Cruise one of the world’s greatest rivers in unparalleled luxury. Indulge your curiosity, expand your intellect and taste the exotic flavors of international cuisine as you float downriver in an intimate, custom-designed 5-star vessel.

Lodges on Land: Stretching across thousands of miles and several countries, the Amazon basin is home to an almost endless number of jungle lodges. The lodges range from luxurious to rustic and it is possible to combine several lodges for more varied ecosystems and experiences. Overnight in bungalows with mosquito nets and ceiling fans, enjoy open-air restaurants and wooden walkways through the rainforest. For true science lovers, there is one lodge that is a biological research lodge where there are opportunities to meet and discuss the work of the resident scientists.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:
Conditions along the Amazon River in Peru divide into two seasons: a high water season from December through May and a low water season from June until November. Cruising the
Amazon in either season promises rich rewards with breathtaking opportunities to view and photograph magnificent plant and animal life unlike anywhere else on earth.

Low Water Season, June - November:
Access the jungle trails that otherwise flooded, allowing deeper access into the jungle by foot, and accompanied by fewer mosquitoes.

High Water Season, December - May:
Relatively cooler and wetter season with a dramatic high water panorama. The Amazon Basin’s rivers and streams rise about 23 feet higher than during the low water season. Aside from the striking visual affect, this also means that every river, creek and lake is navigable.
