A Weeklong Tour and Forum in Russia’s Cultural Capital
St. Petersburg Seminar

DESCRIPTION:
Called the "Venice of the North," St. Petersburg was meant to be Peter the Great’s link to the western world. A convergence of art and soul, the city survived the calamitous 20th century with its reputation as a storehouse of Russian culture intact. Some of the world’s most radiant artworks hang in its museums, and some of the world’s greatest performers, writers and musicians have walked its streets. Today, its lavish pre-revolutionary palaces and churches have been renovated with flare. Daily life swirls around its main boulevard, famed Nevsky Prospect, where lanky fashion models in stiletto heels brush past stout kerchiefed grandmothers. With its tenacious underground current of edgy energy, St. Petersburg is a fundamental lesson in apprehending the spirit of Russia, focusing on six core educational themes. For example, learn about Russian Literature while walking some of the sites described by Dostoevsky in his classic novels. A day dedicated to the beloved Russian dacha tradition includes a driving tour outside the city to a community of summer homes, many connected to famous writers, and concludes with a traditional Russian dinner with a local family in their private dacha. The six themes are: Russian Revolution & the Siege; Peter the Great; Women’s Age of Russia; Russian Ballet & Theatre; Russian Literature; and the Beloved Russian Dacha.
CONSIDER:
June 21st is the pinnacle of White Nights - when the sun in St. Petersburg hardly sets. It is an exciting time to be there (and also peak season for visitors).
