The Fabled Oases of Egypt's Western Desert
From Cairo through the remote Western Desert to Luxor
DESCRIPTION:
Discover antiquities and natural wonders on a journey from oasis to oasis in Egypt’s remote Western Desert to the spectacle of Luxor. This trip features the must-see highlights (the Sphinx, Cheops Pyramid, Egyptian Museum, and Luxor) as well as some truly off-the-beaten path sights that define Egypt.
Explore antiquities and natural wonders in the oases of Egypt’s vast Western Desert, covering two-thirds of Egypt. Pharaohs, kings, warriors, and explorers have all visited this remarkable place of endless sand, fertile oases and magnificent treasures. Exciting, too, are the mummies and tombs that are currently being unearthed in these oases. Explore oases fed by the waters of the Nile, and inhabited since prehistoric times. Visit a 12th-Dynasty temple dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god, and Renenutet, the serpent goddess. Explore Wadi al-Hitan, or “Valley of the Whales” where, among numerous other fossils scattered around, lay more than 400 marine cetacean skeletons. See the recently discovered “Golden Mummies,” Late Period painted tombs, a Temple of Alexander, and relax in thermal hot springs.
Journey through the spectacular White Desert with its eerie protrusions of stunning chalk forms shaped like domes, minarets, and castles. Wander through beautiful palm gardens and enjoy an unforgettable night of desert camping under the stars. Visit picturesque Late Period and Roman temples before driving to Luxor to witness its splendors: the Valley of the Kings and Queens, and the temples of Karnak and Luxor. Travel home or continue on our next journey in Sudan.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:
Egypt is best visited between October and April, when temperatures are cooler but still pleasantly warm across the country. The summer season from May to September is hot, although the high temperatures are alleviated by very dry air, air conditioning, far fewer visitors and lower prices; making summer still a viable season for your trip. There also tends to be a bit of a breeze on the Nile, making a river cruise a good choice during this time of year.
