Galapagos Islands Adventures

The Living Laboratory of Evolution

DESCRIPTION:

Escape to the enchanted isles of the Galapagos. Inch past lounging sea lions, scout for breaching whales offshore and pink flamingos in hidden lagoons. Giant Galapagos tortoises meander distant highlands, and prehistoric marine iguanas sun themselves on dark lava rocks by the shore. Flightless cormorants and tiny penguins dart through the waters while graceful red-billed tropicbirds screech across the sky.

These islands are a living laboratory of evolution, where Darwin made his celebrated observations. Located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, in the Pacific Ocean, these legendary islands have been protected as a national treasure since 1959. At first, they appear to be desolate. Yet, these rough and rocky isles are home to wonderfully strange and abundant wildlife. These islands boast 26 species that are found nowhere else on earth, including the marine iguana, Darwin’s finches, and Galapagos giant tortoises. The islands offer a varied terrain to explore including volcanic heaps, lava fields, lush green vegetation in the highlands and sandy beaches.

There are two main ways to visit the islands, which can be combined for an unusual land and cruise experience:

Expedition Cruise: Ranging from comfortable to luxury, set out with a naturalist guide to explore remarkable island ecosystems, landing each day on a new island, getting up close to the astounding wildlife. It may be possible to spend a night on an island. Ships can range from 16 to 48 guests on board.

Safari Camp: Discover the islands from the land, while staying in an intimate camp with nine luxury tents, en suite bathrooms and flush toilets, and balconies with hammocks and chairs with wonderful views. A restaurant and laboratory pool cater to your needs.

CONSIDER:

There is also a 96-passenger ship which is also good, and is less expensive. There is a trade-off; fewer people keeps the islands feeling more pristine, and there is less time getting on and off the ship. Larger ships will usually cost less and can cruise further.
