Madagascar Sojourn

In a Naturalist's Paradise
DESCRIPTION:

Separated from the African mainland more than 100 million years ago, Madagascar is a living library of evolution. More than 80 percent of the island’s flora and fauna, including 30 species of lemur, the island’s endangered primate, exist nowhere else on earth. Among beautifully vivid extremes, from primary rainforest to sandstone desert, exist some of the most abundant nature reserves on earth, as well as 18 ethnic groups. Learn about natural history, evolution, critical conservation issues, and the amazing diversity of the Malagasy people. With its tropical climate, hugely diverse landscape, abundance of wildlife and friendly locals it is no wonder Madagascar is now making it onto the shortlist of many travelers’ must see destinations.

CONSIDER:

The infrastructure in Madagascar, especially the roads, is not ideal, making Madagascar best suited for adventure travelers. Since travel by roads can be rough, it is possible to charter flights and avoid this travel time although that will add to the cost. But for those willing to brave the roughness of this island, a gem will be discovered!

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:
The island is green and fresh after the rains that fall between January and March, with lemurs and reptiles active and visible. July and August are cool and dry, making this an ideal time for exploring. The whales arrive on Ile Ste Marie from July until late September. Between September and November the weather is particularly lovely and warm.  December is hot, lemurs, reptiles and tenrecs are active, and wildlife viewing is good.
