Following the Nile in Northern Sudan
From Cairo to Kharoum

DESCRIPTION:
Embark on an epic journey overland from Abu Simbel in Egypt through northern Sudan—across endless desert along the beautiful Nile and into thousands of years of ancient Egyptian and Nubian history. This was the route taken by countless invading armies, unfortunate slaves, and early explorers, searching for the source of the Nile. It is a journey like no other for the adventurous traveler. Nubia’s early history is inextricably connected with Egypt. Once a part of the Egyptian empire, the Nubians ultimately became strong enough to rule, providing the first “black Pharaoh.” In the north, discover the first independent Nubian kingdom of Kush, dating back 5,000 years to its peak power. Follow the Nile southward through history, from ancient ruins toward more modern eras. See spectacular pyramid fields and experience a 1,000-year-long Christian civilization. Visit villages and bazaars, see where the Blue and the White Nile unite, behold the Pharaohs’ golden pyramids at daybreak, and experience Sudan’s sweeping sand hills, which reveal treasures the rest of the world has not yet realized exist. Egypt’s legendary riches attract many travelers; but after the crowds of Luxor and Cairo, the untamed and solitary ruins of Sudan allow us to be alone with the ancient world. Few other ancient sites permit such quiet contemplation of history. Since the independence of South Sudan in 2011, there have been political and cultural changes. But for travelers some things never change: Sudanese hospitality remains second to none throughout Africa and the Middle East, and we will experience an adventurous journey never to be forgotten!

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:
Egypt is best visited between October and April, when temperatures are cooler but still pleasantly warm across the country. The summer season from May to September is hot, although the high temperatures are alleviated by very dry air, air conditioning, far fewer visitors and lower prices; making summer still a viable season for your trip. There also tends to be a bit of a breeze on the Nile, making a river cruise a good choice during this time of year.
